‘Dangerous’ – Cape Town Mayor Clashes with Elon Musk

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has responded to recent comments by billionaire Elon Musk, who referred to Cape Town as “a beautiful theme park,” suggesting it was generally safe for tourists, while labeling other parts of South Africa as “extremely dangerous” for women traveling alone without firearms.

In a post on social media platform X, Musk stated: “Cape Town is essentially a beautiful theme park and is generally kept safe for the tourists, so staying in the tourist areas is probably okay. Other parts of the country can be extremely dangerous for a woman travelling alone with no gun. If visiting a trusted friend, listen very carefully to the directions of that friend. Do not get lost or go exploring without an escort.”

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis swiftly responded, inviting Musk to experience the true spirit and character of the city beyond its scenic beauty. He emphasized that Cape Town is home to warm and welcoming people, a thriving startup community, and genuine hospitality.

“Cape Town’s not just for show,” said Hill-Lewis. “Warm people, great startups, and real heart live here alongside incredible beauty. Next time you’re in town, let me show you around.”

Musk’s controversial suggestion of traveling armed emerged ironically just one day before South African authorities publicly destroyed more than 16,000 firearms, primarily handguns and shotguns, as part of an ongoing campaign to reduce gun-related violence and illegal firearm ownership across the country.
